This sunny afternoon couldn’t have been a more beautiful day for an engagement session! We may have had a late spring this year, but Vander Park in Davenport was in full bloom! Perfect timing! Laura and Kurt were so much fun and so easy to work with. This couple is tying the knot very soon and this is one wedding that I’m REALLY looking forward to.

For those that don’t know, I am currently a full-time music teacher, but I recently resigned to run my photography business full-time! It’s been a really lonnngggg (and tiring) process of building my business while teaching middle schoolers, but I’m proud to say that Laura and Kurt will be my first wedding as a full-time business owner!

These two absolutely rocked their session at Vander Veer park & the Figge Art Museum and I hope you enjoy a handful of my personal favorites!

2018 still has a few openings & 2019 is booking very quickly! Click here to check your date!

I am such a huge believer that your reception and party should be the most fun you’ve ever had! I’m also a huge believer that you NEED to keep me there to photograph it. I can’t imagine NOT capturing these amazing smiles and moments!

This is part II of Victoria & James awesome Quad Cities wedding day! Documenting all of the fun during the party/reception was so much fun! Thanks Massetone DJs and Time Well Wasted Party Bus

Wow! I am SO glad this was my first 2018 wedding! My nerves are always on overdrive for the first wedding of the year and this one definitely squashed those nerves within minutes of arriving!

Victoria and James are some of the most genuine & laid-back couples I’ve ever met. The moment I met them, I realized that this day was going to be an absolute blast and a joy to document. Their day was full of excitement, HUGE smiles, loving family members and one of the best parties ever (thanks Massetone DJs and Time Well Wasted Party Bus!) This type of wedding-day is what I wish for all of my couples. Weddings (and the months/days leading up to it) can be a whirlwind of stress and nerves, but Victoria and James were so great! The whole day was very “go with the flow” and turned out so perfectly.

The day started off at the beautiful St. John’s Methodist in Davenport with a reception following at Stoney Creek in Moline.

I always feature some of my favorite images on my blog from each wedding . . . but this wedding? Holy smokes! There were far too many favorites, so stay tuned for part 2 of this blog a little later!

Dress: Hope’s Bridal

Stay tuned for part 2 of this blog!! You do NOT want to miss the party bus and the reception!!

Hang with me, this is a long one.

This announcement is coming a lot sooner than I had planned, but since word has already spread I figured this would be the best possible way to address “the word on the street.” So . . . After this school year, I will be pursuing my photography career and leaving Wilson Middle School. This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but it’s a decision that needed to happen for multiple reasons.

Unless you’ve been out of the loop, you’ve probably noticed that my photography isn’t a side-gig or a hobby. It’s now a 30-40 hour per week commitment that has left me isolated from most of my friends and generally absent from my family. I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve worked from 7 or 8pm until 2 in the morning, then gotten up 4.5 hours later to get ready for work. Coffee and random naps have been my LIFE. The funny part is, this was never my plan, it’s just one of those things that happened.

Do you know what kind of guts and planning it takes to comfortably resign from a full-time job with retirement and benefits? Actually, can anyone REALLY do that comfortably?! Well, let me tell you about it, because I just did it yesterday and it was one of the scariest moments of my life. You know that feeling when you are so nervous and scared that you are between throwing up and running? That was me yesterday. Thankfully, my principal (the amazing Bob Beem) couldn’t have made that moment any better for me and that is something I am seriously going to remember for the rest of my life. I look forward to finishing out the remainder of the school year at this amazing school and I’ve enjoyed my time there very much.

This past year, I shot 15 weddings, multiple engagement sessions, and many other portrait sessions and events. I’m not sure how many people truly understand the time commitment that goes into a wedding from start to finish, but I typically spend 40+ hours on each one. Then there are all the other aspects of running a business that no one REALLY wants to think about when they start out. Things like maintaining a website, blogging, SEO, accounting/taxes (my financial spreadsheet Leif created is my life), answering e-mails, planning for wedding expos, advertising/marketing, taking classes, improving my craft, meeting with clients, etc. . . . and some of these tasks are a full-time job in themselves!

Even with all the time off as a teacher, the busiest seasons are smack-dab in the middle of the school year. So . . . the point of all this rambling is that no matter how hard I’ve tried to balance my teaching schedule with my photography, I’m still torn in 800 different directions . . . And let’s not forget the fact that I have a husband, a son, and friends who think I don’t exist anymore.

I know how much I can take and I’ve officially reached that limit.

I’m so thankful that my husband Leif and I have prepared for this as much as humanely possible. I think the only thing we AREN’T prepared for is sharing an office!! (He also works from home as an account manager for an awesome company) Between fighting over his comfortable office chair and my inability to stop talking, I may end up moving my office into our walk-in closet!! All joking aside, I’m not sure we could be in a better position for such a huge decision. We are so excited!

The fact is, LIFE IS SO, SO SHORT!!!!

Around 8 years ago, I went through some pretty awful life events and when I emerged on the other side of that storm I vowed that I wasn’t going to “settle” because it was easy or comfortable . . . or because it was the so-called “right” thing to do. I vowed to start being honest with myself and trust my heart even if it meant doing something people might shake their heads about. So, with that said, I refuse to look back on my life someday and wish I would have “just gone for it” when I was 32. I’ve made quite a few big mistakes in my life and this is NOT going to be one of them no matter how it turns out! I realize how lucky I am to even have the option to make this decision and that’s not something I’m willing to throw away.

This past November I found myself in a random restaurant in Canmore, Alberta having dinner with Two Mann Studios (they are kind of a big deal if you don’t know). I’m not one of those people that tend to dork out when I meet someone I admire, but this was one of those moments for me. The reason I am telling you this is because both of these photographers had other jobs before becoming two of the best photographers in the world. I’m not aiming to be the best in the world or anything, but it was pretty amazing listening to them talk about their transition into full-time photography. What they’ve accomplished is incredibly inspiring. My point is, I feel that I have a lot of opportunities that I’ll only have a chance at IF I have the time. Some of those goals include teaching, traveling, and maybe even speaking at conferences. I still value the art of teaching and would love to pursue these opportunities.

I have so many people to thank for making this possible.

So many people that it would probably be impossible to name them all . . . but THANK YOU to everyone who has been there, whether you are a random Facebook/Insta follower, a client, a friend, a mentor, or a member of my crazy wonderful family.

Again, I’m incredibly thankful to have this opportunity. My 2018 wedding bookings are off the charts, 2019 is booking steadily, and I’m looking forward to explore additional ways to expand Cadenza and improve my client experience. My clients are some of the best people and I am so thankful for them. They’ve often been my biggest cheerleaders and are truly the people that motivate me more than anyone.

2018 is certainly going to be a year to remember. So get ready, because I’m pulling out all the stops.

Love,

Kelly

If there’s one element of photographing people that I love the most, it’s the candid moments.

Those moments when people are unaware that their photo is being taken and are just being . . .  real. In my mind, the candid moments are where the heart and soul of photography dwells. Candid moments aren’t always perfect, but that is what I love most about them. Many candid images come about by luck, some are from my dedicated second shooters, and some are definitely a matter of being fast on my feet with my settings.

2017 was filled with some of the best candid images thus far. I made it a goal to work harder to capture my clients’ spirits and tell their stories. After all, wedding photography is a story and wouldn’t be complete without capturing the fun, the emotions and those random moments that say 1000 words.

Please enjoy my favorites from 2017. It was hard to pick . . . and I’m certain I probably missed some, but these are the ones that either hit me right in the feels, made me laugh or simply captured those in-between moments that are inevitable on a wedding day.

Images are in no particular order, although the very first few are definitely my favs!

Wow.

2017 was an amazing year! It was the busiest wedding year yet and I had the honor of working with many amazing Quad Cities couples, as well as my very first destination wedding in Hilton Head, South Carolina! Not only did all of these weddings turn out amazingly perfect, but I have a lot of new people I can call friends.

Now that it is 2018 I am really looking forward to a new year and photographing new Cadenza Photo Imaging couples. Wedding photography is something that I am so passionate about. I’ve pushed myself and my work to the max this year and at times, it’s seriously been challenging. My goal is always to focus on telling my clients’ stories, because a wedding is one of the rare opportunities that family and friends are all together. This is an important event that deserves amazing documentation. I am very much in love with candid moments (expect a blog on that soon) but I always enjoy creating images for clients that are bold, unexpected and capture how that particular moment felt.

The following images are a collection of the bold and colorful. Please enjoy!

Six Tips to be sure you are hiring a professional

Quad CIties Wedding Photographer - Quad Cities Photographer - Photographer Quad Cities - TPC Deere Run Wedding - artistic photography - fall wedding - bride getting ready

Hey brides and grooms! I’d like to send out a warning about wedding photography. Currently, there are some very scary trends going on that you need to know about as a consumer. Just in the last week, I received 2 messages from panicked brides who had their wedding images completely ruined by their photographer or friend with a good camera. This makes me so sick.

No matter what your budget, here are ways to stay safe when hiring a photographer:

1. Ask to see an entire wedding gallery from start to finish. A wedding day has several challenging elements, especially lighting church or inside formals. This will show you everything, not just the “pretty” images they want you to see.

2. Many photographers are displaying images from styled shoots. If you don’t know what a styled shoot is, it’s where a photographer attends a conference where the lighting and conditions are provided for them…OR, it’s a shoot that is 100% controlled by them. Styled shoots are common (and so fun), but should not be the majority of someone’s portfolio.

3. Currently, there are local photographers using stock wedding images on their site. Essentially, they are using another person’s work, purchasing it legally and advertising it as their work. In the past, we have also had photographers steal other people’s work to use on their websites (very illegal). Again, always ask to see a full gallery!!

4. Be cautious of companies with associate photographers. This is where you book a photography company but may not have your wedding shot by the main photographer. This is a very common and totally legit way to do business, however you should absolutely be provided with the name of who is shooting your wedding AND examples of their work when you book!!! Some companies are hiring inexperienced photographers and they have ruined weddings. And yes, it’s happening here in the QC.

5. Cheap prices are (*most times*) a red flag. I totally understand budgets are tough, but many cheap photographers (and other vendors) are not licensed, not insured, and not paying taxes. This may not matter to you, but it does mean they have a lot less at stake for your day. Many photographers in this area will work with you on payments.

6. Every once in awhile people get lucky, but your wedding is NOT a job for a friend who takes good photos. Or someone with a “good” camera. I cannot stress this enough. Every time a wedding is ruined it’s because someone hired a friend, family member or a new photographer with zero wedding experience. Wedding photography truly is so, so challenging. It has zero to do with having a “good” camera. Your wedding photos can’t be redone and is the only investment you actually have forever from your day!!

Thank you for reading. There are so many talented photographers in our area. Please hire a professional and someone who cares about you and your day. PLEASE SHARE! ❤️

This was a very special Quad Cities wedding for me!

Besides being the photographer of Emily and Austin’s wedding, I also had the opportunity to grow up across the street from Emily and her brothers. I’ve literally known Emily since she was born!

If anyone reading this had an amazing crew of neighbor friends when you were a kid, you know how special those people are. I was an only child and Emily and her brothers were the siblings I never had. Also, if anyone grew up in a small country town like Preemption . . . having neighbor friends was kind of essential to surviving!!!

Preemption Methodist Church set the scene for the ceremony, with a reception following at the beautiful TPC Deere Run, which in my opinion is the perfect setting for photographs.

This the largest blog that I’ve ever posted, but I just had too many favorites from this wedding! Scroll all the way to the bottom, because you don’t want to miss the last shot!

When Katie told me that she was down to do a lifestyle session in her home I was super excited. Truth be told, I’m not much for props and backdrops (although I do own these things!) I just prefer the simplicity of my clients’ homes. This way new parents (and baby!) don’t have to leave home & we can capture beautiful moments where everyone is most comfortable!
